Tom Dixon is fast becoming a very well known name and brand around the globe. He has made such an impact on design in so many ways, it is actually hard to pin point where his major strengths are. We are surrounded by great examples of his designs in everyday objects for our home, lighting, furniture and accessories. He is so damn brilliant at what he does, that he has been named Maison ét Objet's 'Designer of the Year', for 2014. Now that is pretty spectacular!!
At Maison ét Objet this year Tom's installation ‘The Factory’ comprised of an instant factory creating live on-site production, a packaging unit and a pop up shop all set up within one space for the manufacturing of limited-edition scented accessories, sold exclusively at Maison & Objet Paris.´ Above are some examples of the fantastic concept.
The limited edition ‘Mud’ collection is made with bricks and material from London. The red bricks were a stand out choice due to them being an iconic symbol of London and the porous nature of them making the material perfect as a diffuser. Tom said ‘We scoured the globe for a new and efficient way of diffusing fragrances - Volcanic rock from Indonesia, Charcoal from Japan, Hi-tech Ceramic from Germany, but strangely the most effective material was in our back yard – the humble London Brick!’
We all look forward to seeing what Tom and his team create next, he is quite the inspiring individual that has consistently taken a fresh approach to his projects. Is their any designers, artists or makers which inspire you? Drop us a line we would love to hear about them.
