This stunning garden is the work of the super talented team at Secret Gardens, a Garden design firm headed up by Matthew Cantwell who since it started in 1994 has won many awards for it's creative landscape design.
The property was built as a dream home for the clients, and the garden needed to live up to these expectations. The fact that the site has a significant gradient makes it both more interesting and challenging. We love the gritty solidity that the incorporation of the huge sandstone boulder provides and it's natural shape works well in contrast with the formal lines and ordered planting of the garden.
This garden is not only a stunning addition to the client's dream home, but it also won Gold and Best in Category in the Plantscape Design category at the 2013 AILDM Landscape Design Awards (Australian Institute of Landscape Designers & Managers).
The garden certainly packs a punch in terms of it's detail and planting style. The plants were chosen to be both hardy and to give great structural interest through their contrasting foliage and colour.
We can't all obviously live in an environment like this, however we can certainly take inspiration from elements within this space that we may be able to incorporate in our own gardens. For example the use of the cordylines underplanted with the hardy succulents below and contrasted with the aubergine coloured wall, gives a simple but significant impact that is relatively easy to recreate.
We love highlighting great design and hope that whether you have an urban garden, rambling rural retreat or just a small terrace or balcony there are elements within this stunning contemporary coastal garden that have inspired you!
