Following on from our post last week on 11 Howard Hotel in New York, we thought we would stick closer to home and bring you some inspiration from a more local source - the recently opened Ovolo Woolloomooloo Hotel (Sydney). Designed by Hassell Studio - this hotel is a definite destination on the ever impressive Finger Wharf.
Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo has been an iconic architectural structure for over 100 years and after being saved from demolition has been reinvigorated into one of the coolest hubs of bars, restaurants, hotels and apartments in Australia.
The Ovolo Hotel group is an independent Hong-Kong based company whose goal for their hotels is to set the stage for Effortless Living. "Our mission: Shiny Happy People all Around." That includes hotel staff, guests and casual visitors - to create an environment where people are connected to their 'place', where fun and character abounds.
Part of that translates into the way that the Ovolo Hotels put the guest at the heart of absolutely everything. From the minute you have checked in, guests can effortlessly relax and utilise the hotel amenities free of charge....From breakfast, wifi, laundry facilities, gym, bar snacks and Happy Hour - to the mini-bar in your room! We're not sure you would ever want to leave!
Ovolo has again teamed up with international design practise Hassell to design their latest Sydney offering. One of the key challenges was how to inject vitality into the public hotel spaces, and to negate the uninviting 'wind tunnel' that existed in the large corridor of the building.
The design is a huge success - Hassell have created zoned recreational hubs to invite guests to linger and feel immediately connected to the hotel, with mini pavilions, banquette seating, open shelving, work spaces, and excuses to kick back and relax (we love the pool table zone!)
The cavernous space of the public area of the hotel, brightly lit with a colour palette to match, is contrasted with the more deliberately atmospheric guest rooms which celebrate the industrial heritage of Finger Wharf as well as introducing custom-made features, lighting and artworks.
We particularly like the back-lit upholstered headboards and may just have to store that inspiration away for the right residential project!
With hotel rooms titled Superoo, Deluxaroo and the aptly named Ultraroo - the Ovolo Woolloomooloo is unmistakably playing up to it's Australian sense of place and fun! The Ultraroo suite below is a highlight with the mezzanine bedroom and it's very own round cocktail bar....
Hassell have helped to stamp Ovolo as the Australian benchmark in meeting the needs of a new generation of guests - we hope to experience it for ourselves soon!
