With the coldest weather in five years about to hit us - we are drawn to weekend retreats and get-aways to take our minds off the wintery conditions! Especially when there are stunning locations and interiors to discover - and Drift House in Port Fairy, Victoria is on our wish-list.
However, Drift House may not be all as it seems on first glance (a heritage listed property in the charming Victorian town of Post Fairy) as the period facade is just one element to what is a property of contrasts. The restored original bluestone residence is now joined by a fantastic modern addition, clad in a perforated metal skin and linked by a glass extension.
We love the idea behind the new addition - the architects wanted to "mimic the original building's footprint in width and depth and sit it back about a metre so it read as a shadow or a ghost of the front building - the silent twin brother who always lurks in the shadows." Having to navigate the challenges of heritage parameters, the result is really impressive.
The owners commissioned award winning architect studio Multiplicity to design the transformation of Drift House. The brief was to create four self-contained suites so the owners could operate a boutique guest house.
Multiplicity were given carte blanche over the design of Apartment Four above with stunning results and the other apartments have been artfully designed to respect the period features whilst simultaneously creating a fresh and completely modern feel.
What do you think about the green ceiling above? Echoed by the green throw on the bed and the foliage in the vase by the fire - we think it is a bit of creative magic! Of course green tones work beautifully with timber, fresh white paint and given a bit of 'grit' with the black accents.
Varying tones of green are a recurring feature. Apartment Two features commissioned Art on a curved bathroom pod that separates the living and sleeping zones.
Apartment Three makes good use of recycled natural materials and has the benefit of access to a private outdoor courtyard complete with it's own open fireplace.
Since opening, Drift House has received numerous awards both globally and locally - and with such a fresh and innovative approach to offering boutique accommodation we can understand why. The owners approach is summed up " we think luxury is not about brand names, star ratings or dollars. It is an outcome of how we feel; a certain state of mind, an individual experience."
So are you packing your bags yet?! Incidentally, there are some rather tempting Winter Packages on offer - check them out here and we'll see you there!
